Names Chair of Botany

William Campbell Steere
The Michigan Alumnus 357

Dr. Steere 
joined the University faculty in 1931,
 as an Instructor in Botany after teach
ing for a few years at Temple Univer
sity. He has been a full Professor since 
last year, and is the author of a num
ber of articles.

Besides his teaching
 duties, Dr. Steere was named an academic counselor in the College of Liter
ature, Science and the Arts in 1940.
 During the war he spent two years as
 Senior Botanist, on leave from the University, for the Board of Economic
 Warfare. In this capacity he went to
 Peru, Ecuador and Colombia in search
 of quinine to supply the Army's needs 
for malaria victims.


Dr. Steere is a grandson of the late
 distinguished zoologist, Joseph Beal Steere, '68, 70/, Ph.D. (Hon.) 75, who 
served on the University faculty from
 1876 to 1893.
