Regents' Proceedings 19

Wilhelm A. Piskorowski, D.D.S., assistant dean for community-based dental education and clinical associate professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, will retire from active faculty status on July 17, 2017.

Dr. Piskorowski received his B.S. (1975) degree from the University of Detroit and his D.D.S. (1979) degree from Loyola University. After working in private practice for several years, he joined the University of Michigan faculty as an adjunct lecturer in 2001, and was promoted to adjunct clinical assistant professor in 2005, clinical assistant professor in 2006, and clinical associate professor in 2012. He also served as director of outreach and community affairs (2006-12) and assistant dean for community-based dental education (2012-17).

Dr. Piskorowski played a transformational leadership role in the development and enhancement of the School of Dentistry's outreach programs. As the assistant dean for community-based dental education, Dr. Piskorowski grew the program to a maximum of 12 weeks of experience for each dental student with 117 credentialed preceptors at over 30 sites across the state of Michigan. He delivered countless presentations on the School's community involvement and access to care issues to state legislators and component dental societies. As a mentor, Dr. Piskorowski supervised teams that received the Ida Gray Award from the School's Multicultural Affairs Committee, the university's James T. Neubacher Award, and the American Dental Association Foundation's B. "Bud" Tarrson Dental School Student Community Leadership Award. He received numerous university awards, including the Clinical Instructor of the Year, the Commendation for Teacher Performance, and the Faculty Appreciation Award. Dr. Piskorowski received the prestigious William J. Gies Award (2013) from the American Dental Education Association for outstanding innovation by a dental educator and the Emmett C. Bolden Dentist Citizen of Year Award (2014) from the Michigan Dental Association. He was passionate about access to care issues, was a member of the Michigan Dental Association's Access to Care Committee, and served as the chair of the Michigan Oral Health Care Coalition.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Wilhelm A. Piskorowski, clinical associate professor emeritus of dentistry.
