Vijayan N. Nair, Ph.D., Donald A. Darling Collegiate Professor of Statistics, professor of statistics, College of Literature, Science, and Arts, and professor of industrial and operations engineering, College of Engineering, and faculty associate, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, will retire from active faculty status on May 31, 2017.

Professor Nair received his B. Econ. (1972) degree from the University of Malaya and his Ph.D. (1978) degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as a professor in 1993. Professor Nair was named the Donald A. Darling Collegiate Professor of Statistics in 2002. He served as chair of the Department of Statistics from 1998-2010.

An exemplary scholar, teacher, and leader, Professor Nair has an international reputation for his research in industrial statistics. His work explored a number of areas, including statistical modeling and inference; credit modeling and risk analysis; engineering statistics; quality and productivity improvements; reliability engineering; design and analysis of experiments; data networks; statistics in neuroscience; and behavioral intervention studies. As chair, Professor Nair played an instrumental leadership role in building the Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan into one of the top programs in the country. He is a co-founder of the Michigan Data Science Institute and helped launch the undergraduate program in data science. Professor Nair is a former editor of the journals Technometrics and International Statistical Review. He is a former president of the International Statistical Institute and the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics, and is a former chair of the Statistics Division of the American Society for Quality. Professor Nair chaired numerous committees and study panels at the national and international levels, including the Board of Trustees of the National Institute of Statistical Sciences. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Quality, the American Statistical Association, and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Vijayan N. Nair, Donald A. Darling Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Statistics, professor emeritus of statistics, and professor emeritus of industrial and operations engineering.
