After forty-seven years of uninterrupted connection with the School of Dentistry of the University of Michigan, Dr. Russell Welford Bunting, having reached the age of seventy years on June 2, 1951, has become eligible for retirement under the provisions of the University's "Bylaws."

Soon after his graduation from the School of Dentistry, Dr. Bunting joined its staff as an assistant in 1904 and has ever since been prominent in its councils, as professor since 1914, as Secretary of the School from 1912 to 1923, and as its dean from 1937 until the beginning of his preretirement furlough in 1950.

Throughout this time his sincerity, his fine personal character, and his excellent powers of judgment, accompanied by unfailing courtesy and good will, have assured him the respect and affection of his students and colleagues, and of an ever-increasing circle of alumni. Dr. Bunting has also won national distinction for his extensive research into the causes and prevention of dental caries and is well known throughout the profession for his frequent and thoughtful contributions to its literature.

The honors he has received, which include election to the presidency of the Michigan State Dental Society, the International Association for Dental Research, and the Pan American Dental Association, are evidence of his reputation as a leading dental scientist, and the progress of our own School of Dentistry during his deanship, its growth in physical facilities, and the enrichment of its instructional offerings attest to his success as an administrator.

The Regents of the University of Michigan heartily thank and congratulate Dr. Bunting for his notable achievements, and upon his retirement confer upon him the title Professor Emeritus of Dentistry and Dean Emeritus of the School of Dentistry, inviting him to avail himself of all the courtesies customarily extended to emeritus members of the faculty.
