Robert A. Bagramian, D.D.S., M.P.H., Dr.P.H., professor of dentistry at the School of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on June 30, 2021.

Dr. Bagramian received his D.D.S. (1960) degree from Temple University, his M.P.H. (1967) degree from the University of North Carolina, and his Dr.P.H. (1969) degree from the University of Michigan. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as assistant professor in 1969, and was promoted to associate professor in 1972, and professor in 1975. He also served as an acting chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine (2005-06). From 2012-14, Dr. Bagramian served as the interim director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research.

Dr. Bagramian is a diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health and a fellow of the International College of Dentists. He served as chair of Community Dentistry from 1970 until 1990 during which time he established the Community Outreach Program in the School of Dentistry. He served as nonresident dean for the College of Health Sciences at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia from 2007-15. His career focused on dental public health with efforts to seek out and provide care to those populations who for whatever reason have not been able to receive it. These have included children, the elderly, persons living with disabilities, migrant farm workers, prisoners, low-income groups, and others. He has been the chair for the Provost’s Committee on Review and Recommendations: Future of the Dentistry School (1986-87). He served as a member of the university’s Human Subjects Committee for over 20 years. He has been a visiting professor and lecturer at a number of key universities, including the University of Berne, the University of Malaya, the National University of Singapore, the Chung Shan Dental College, the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of South Carolina. He is a consultant to the World Health Organization and the Federation Dentaire Internationale. His publications include over 100 manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters. He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including the Journal of American Dental Association, the Journal of Dental Research, the Caries Research Journal, the Journal of American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and the Journal of Periodontology. He has been a member of numerous masters and doctoral committees. He received over seven million dollars in funding for research and public programs and continues as an ad-hoc grant reviewer for the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Robert A. Bagramian, professor emeritus of dentistry.
