Raymond Lewis Hayes, Professor of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status May 31, 1981, after eight years of service as devoted teacher and researcher at The University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
Dr. Hayes joined the staff of the School of Dentistry in 1937 as professor in endodontics following early retirement from Howard University School of Dentistry where he had a distinguished career of 38 years as teacher, researcher, and administrator. He thus has had two separate academic careers, influencing thousands of students in different parts of the country. He has also played an important role in the development of the field of endodontics.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he attended undergraduate college at The University of Michigan, where he received the A.B. degree in 1931. He took his dental training at Indiana University, earning the D.D.S. degree in 1935, and then returned to Michigan for graduate study and the M.S. degree in oral pathology in 1937.
A highly regarded and effective teacher, he is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards from Howard University, and awards for contributions to dental education from the Indiana State Dental Association, the Wolverine Dental Association, and the University of Michigan Black Dental Students Association. The U-M School of Dentistry recently established the "Raymond L. Hayes Award in Endodontics" to be given annually to an outstanding student in this area of dentistry, in honor of his many contributions to the School.
The author of numerous publications, his research has centered on dental caries and diseases of the dental pulp and periapical tissues.
He is a member of Sigma Xi and Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor societies and a diplomate of both the American Board of Oral Medicine and the American Board of Endodontics. He also is an Emeritus Fellow of the American Academy of Oral Pathology and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, in addition to being an active member of many other professional organizations.
The Regents now salute this distinguished health educator for his dedicated service by naming him Professor Emeritus of Dentistry.
