Panos Papalambros, Ph.D., James B. Angell Distinguished University Professor, Donald C. Graham Professor of Engineering, professor of mechanical engineering, professor of integrative systems and design in the College of Engineering; professor of architecture in the Alfred A. Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; and professor of art in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, retired from active faculty status on December 31, 2022.
Professor Papalambros received his diploma in mechanical and electrical engineering (1974) from the National Technical University of Athens and his M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1979) degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. He joined the University of Michigan in 1979 as assistant professor of mechanical engineering and has served as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (1992-98, and 2007-08), as the founding chair and director of the University of Michigan Interdisciplinary Design Science Doctoral Program (2006-11), and as the founding chair of the Integrative Systems and Design Division (2013-18) of the College of Engineering.
Professor Papalambros’s expertise is in design science and design optimization, with applications to sustainable design, automotive systems, design of complex engineered systems, product design, and architectural design. He is a fellow of ASME, SAE and the Design Society, and recipient of the ASME Joel and Ruth Spira Outstanding Design Educator Award (2007), the Stephen S. Attwood Award (2009), the ASEE Ralph Coats Roe Award (2014), the ASME/ASEE Robert Abbott Award (2014), and the ASME Ben C. Sparks Medal (2019). He has published over 450 journal articles, conference proceedings papers, and book chapters.
The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Panos Y. Papalambros, James B. Angell Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, Donald C. Graham Professor Emeritus of Engineering, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, professor emeritus of integrative systems and design, professor emeritus of architecture, and professor emeritus of art.
