The Regents of the University of Michigan extend to Norman Herbert Anning, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, their cordial felicitations upon his attainment of his seventieth birthday on August 28, 1953, and their gratitude for his loyal and conscientious service to this University since he first became a member of the faculty thirty-three years ago.

A graduate of Queen's University with the degrees A.B.(1905) and A.M.(1906), Mr. Anning came to us after having taught in the public schools of British Columbia, working as a railway construction engineer, serving in the Canadian Army overseas in the First World War, and acting as instructor in mathematics in the University of Maine.

While he has been at the University of Michigan he has proven himself a capable teacher who engages the full attention of his classes, and he has maintained a keen interest in the byways of mathematics, participating in the activities of the Mathematical Association of America, and contributing to its journal, the American Mathematical Monthly, of which he was for a number of years associate editor.

Now, upon his retirement from active duty, the Regents confer upon him the title Assistant Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, inviting him to avail himself of all the courtesies customarily extended to emeritus members of the faculty.
