Regents' Proceedings 511

In accordance with the recommendation of the Executive Committee of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the following statement and resolutions were adopted and included in the record of the meeting (p. 511):

WHEREAS, Neil Hooker Williams, Professor of Physics, on October 23, 1940, reached the age of seventy years and therefore became eligible for retirement, and

WHEREAS, Professor Williams, a graduate of this University in 1893 and recipient of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1912, has served as a member of the faculty of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for thirty-two years; therefore be it

Resolved, That the Executive Committee of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts express to Professor Williams its appreciation of his notable service as a teacher of physics and of his significant scholarly attainments, and be it further

Resolved, That Professor Williams be recommended to the Regents for appointment as Professor Emeritus of Physics and for the appropriate retirement allowance.

On recommendation of the President the following preamble and resolutions were adopted (p. 496):

WHEREAS, Neil Hooker Williams, Professor of Physics since 1919, a member of the Faculty for the past thirty-two years, and a graduate of the University of Michigan with the degree B.S. (E.E.) in 1893 and the degree Ph.D. in 1912, a teacher and a scholar who has contributed importantly to the effectiveness of his department during his many years of service, attained the age of seventy years on October 23, 1940, and has thus become eligible for retirement at the close of the present semester, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Regents of the University of Michigan confer upon Dr. Williams the title Professor Emeritus of Physics and recommend him for the usual retiring allowance, as of February 14, 1941, and further

Resolved, That the Regents express their deep appreciation of Professor Williams' long period of fruitful activity, and extend to him a cordial invitation to continue to make use of the library and laboratory facilities of the University in the pursuit of his personal studies.
