Mary Ellen McLean

Mary Ellen McLean, D.D.S., clinical associate professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on April 30, 2018.

Professor McLean received her D.D.S. degree from Creighton University in 1985. She completed both a general practice residency (1985-86) and a two-year advanced education in general dentistry residency (1989-9 1) while serving active duty in the Air Force. Professor McLean was board certified by the American Board of General Dentistry in 1993 and was honored as a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry in 2000. She joined the University of Michigan faculty as a clinical assistant professor in 1997, and was promoted to clinical associate professor in 2003. She served in the Air Force Reserves until her retirement at the rank of colonel in 2011.

A superb teacher and clinician, Professor McLean has been a mainstay as an instructor in the Vertically Integrated Clinics where she supervised predoctoral dental students as they provided patient care. She was the director of Clinical Foundations I, a lecture and preclinical laboratory course focused on the development of basic diagnostic and restorative skills, from 2000-14. Professor McLean also served as a course director or row instructor of numerous other lecture courses, seminars, and preclinical courses. She was inducted as a faculty member into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society in 2004 and received the Dl Instructor of the Year Award in 2009 from the Class of 2012. Professor McLean published seven peerreviewed articles and sixteen research abstracts. She was a member of numerous task forces and dental school committees, including the Admissions Committee, the Bylaws Committee, and the Executive Committee. Professor McLean also served on the UMAnn Arbor Military Officer Education Program Committee from 2004-08. She was a member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, and the American Dental Education Association. An exemplary role model and dedicated colleague, Professor McLean devoted her professional life to the service of our country in the Air Force and the development of dental students in the initial stages of their training.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Mary Ellen McLean, clinical associate professor emerita of dentistry.
