L. Beach professor of education, will retire from active faculty status Retirement May 31, 1983. His career as a specialist in elementary school curriculum, supervision, and administration spanned more than 30 years in public schools and the University.

Professor Beach was born in Purcell, Oklahoma, November 29, 1920, and received his common schooling in Flint, Michigan. He received the A.B. degree from Michigan Normal College in 1946 after a three-year hiatus for service in the Navy. His A.M. and Ph.D. degrees were granted by The University of Michigan in 1947 and 1953, respectively. Professor Beach began his professional career as a teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, became an elementary school principal in Battle Creek, Michigan, and, after further experience in the public schools, returned to The University of Michigan as a lecturer in education in 1953. Professor Beach's experience in higher education was largely at The University of Michigan, but he also participated several times in faculty exchange programs at the University of Sheffield. His major research and instructional interests focused on elementary school supervision. These interests were reflected in his classwork, his publications and his careful work as chairman of many doctoral committees.

In addition to his academic duties, Professor Beach served for many years as chairman of the undergraduate Committee of the School of Education, as director of elementary student teaching, and as assistant dean from 1969 to 1972. During his tenure, Professor Beach also served as a consultant to public schools on matters of curriculum and administration. He was a member of the state advisory committees, and active in national professional organizations and honorary societies.

The Regents now salute this distinguished educator for his service to the University by naming him Professor Emeritus of Education.
