Henry S. Kowalewski, professor of architecture in the A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, will retire from active faculty status on May 31, 2000.

Professor Kowalewski received his B.Arch. degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. He joined the faculty as a lecturer in 1962 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1966, associate professor in 1971, and professor in 1976. Since his appointment to the architecture program, Professor Kowalewski has taught design, construction, environmental technologies, advanced lighting, and building enclosure systems to undergraduates and master's degree students in the college. He has also been an active member of many program, college, and University committees. Widely recognized as an outstanding teacher, in 1989 Professor Kowalewski received the student-sponsored "Nobody Does It Like You" award for excellence in teaching.

Professor Kowalewski is registered as a professional in Michigan and Illinois. He worked for James Kideney and Associates in New York, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Thomas Tanner of Ann Arbor, becoming a partner with Tanner until 1973 when he began Kowalewski and Associates, where he currently practices. Over the years, many Michigan graduates had their first professional experience as employees of his firm. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), and Huron Valley Chapter of AIA (director from 1987-90).

The Regents salute this distinguished educator by naming Henry S. Kowalewski professor emeritus of architecture.
