Henry A. Buchtel IV, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology in the Medical School and associate professor of psychology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, retired from active faculty status on February 29, 2020.
Professor Buchtel received his BA. (1964) degree from Dartmouth College and his M.A. (1965) and Ph.D. (1969) degrees from McGill University. He carried out basic and applied research in Italy (Pisa: 1969-72; Parma: 1975-78), England (London: 1972-75) and Canada (Montreal: 1978-80). He was appointed staff psychologist the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center 1980. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as an associate professor in 1981. Professor Buchtel’s teaching included the clinical areas of proseminar, psycho’ogical theory (brain and behavior) and research methods in clinical psychology. Additionally, he served an external examiner for dissertations in the psychology departments at the University of Waterloo and University of Windsor.
Professor Buchtel’s research interests focused on attention and memory, particularly in patients with seizure disorders. He published articles psychological and medical journals on topics ranging from methodology to treatment, and chapters books on psychological topics, such memory and attention, and clinical topics such epilepsy. Dr. Buchtel was elected to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, an associate member 1965 and made full member 1980; he was honored for years of active membership 2015 and has served the University of Michigan Chapter Council well on the National Board of Directors. He was fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (2013) and the American Psychological Association (2015) and was commissioner on the APA Commission on Accreditation (2012-16). He was member (1977) and fellow (2007) of the International Neuropsychological Symposium. He was acting chair of the Clinical Area (1992-93) and served on numerous dissertation committees, admission committees, and internal department committees.
The Regents now salute this distinguished psychologist for his service to the University of Michigan by naming Henry A. Buchtel IV, associate professor emeritus of psychology, Medical School and associate professor emeritus of psychology, College of Science, and the Arts.
