Gregory H. Wakefield, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the College of Engineering and associate professor of music in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, retired from active faculty status on June 30, 2022.

Professor Wakefield received his B.A. (1978) and his M.S.E.E. (1982) degrees from the University of Minnesota. He received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (1985) and a Ph.D. degree in psychology (1988) from the University of Minnesota. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science in 1986 and was promoted to associate professor in 1992. He held additional appointments at the University of Michigan as an associate professor of music in the Department of Performing Arts Technology in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance (1999-2022) and as assistant professor of otolaryngology at Michigan Medicine’s Kresge Hearing Research Institute (1988-2013).

Professor Wakefield’s research focused on perceptual acoustics, music processing, time- frequency distributions, signal analysis and synthesis, sound quality engineering, computational audition, psychoacoustics, auditory prosthetics, and statistical signal processing. He graduated 18 Ph.D. students and published 37 refereed journal papers, 93 refereed conference proceedings and 60 conference abstracts. In the EECS department, he served as the Divisional Graduate Program academic advisor (1999-2002), chair of the EECS Curriculum Committee (2004-22), ABET coordinator for undergraduate programs (for electrical engineering 2005-12; for computer engineering 2006-12; and for computer science 2007-12). In the College of Engineering, he served as the faculty advisor to the Multidisciplinary Design Program (2017-19), as a member of the Faculty Committee on Discipline (2014-19), and as a member of the International Programs Committee (2007-12). He served as the faculty director of ArtsEngine (2019-22). He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the IEEE, the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, and the Audio Engineering Society. He is a recipient of an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1987) and the IEEE Millennium Medal (2000).

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Gregory H. Wakefield, associate professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science and associate professor emeritus of music.
