George W. Morley, M.D., Norman F. Miller Professor of Gynecology and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, will retire from active faculty status on December 31, 1997.

Dr. Morley earned his B.S. (1944), M.D. (1949), and M.S. (1955) degrees and completed his internship and residency training (1949-54), at the University of Michigan. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1956 as an instructor in obstetrics and gynecology. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1958, associate professor in 1961, and professor in 1970. He became chief of the Gynecologic Oncology Service in 1964 and director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship, which he initiated, in 1971. In 1987, he was named the first Norman F. Miller Professor of Gynecology.

Dr. Morley is one of America's most distinguished gynecologic surgeons. Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology in 1958 and in gynecologic oncology in 1974, his academic pursuits have spanned the full breadth of obstetrics and gynecology. He is best known for his work as a surgeon for benign and malignant gynecologic disease. Dr. Morley's bibliography lists over 110 articles and 15 book chapters, including major contributions on radical hysterectomy and radical vulvectomy. He is best known for his work establishing the role of pelvic exenteration in the treatment of recurrent cancer of the cervix. This series has the highest five-year survival rate reported in the literature and remains a landmark of success in treating recurrent pelvic neoplasm.

Dr. Morley has been elected president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, and the Norman F. Miller Gynecologic Society. He has also served as a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. He has three times been listed as among America's ten best obstetricians and gynecologists.

In the operating room, Dr. Morley was not only a firm master, but also a patient teacher, assuring that all members of the surgical team learned both the fundamental principles and the final nuances of operative gynecology. He is also an excellent lecturer and discussant. In recognition of Dr. Morley's contributions, in 1993 the Gynecologic Oncology Service at the University of Michigan Medical Center was named the George W. Morley Service. After an extraordinarily short campaign, the George W. Morley Collegiate Professorship was established.

The Regents now salute this distinguished physician and teacher by naming George W. Morley the Norman F. Miller Professor Emeritus of Gynecology and professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology
