Donald B. Gooch, Professor of Art, has retired from active faculty D. B. Gooch status at the University after a career as a teacher that extended over thirty-eight years.

Born in Bloomingdale, Michigan, Professor Gooch attended Western State Teachers College in Kalamazoo before coming to the University in 1932, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1935 and a master of design in 1939.

He was named an instructor in design in 1936 and was subsequently promoted to Assistant Professor in 1942, Associate Professor in 1951, and Professor in 1956.

He distinguished himself as an effective teacher and at the same time maintained a vigorous professional career as a free-lance artist, advertising designer, and illustrator both of books and in the film medium.

He was largely responsible for the development of the major in advertising design at the College of Architecture and Design and nurtured that program until it achieved a stature second to none in the state. He also developed an intern program for his students that mirrored his own capacity to remain in continuous contact with professional advertising as a means of maintaining the excellence of his instructional efforts in communication design.

The Regents of the University express to Professor Gooch their deep gratitude for his long and dedicated service to his students and indeed the University as they name him Professor Emeritus of Art.
