Charles Jaslow, professor emeritus of dentistry, died March 19 in Sun City, Ariz., where he and his wife, Carol, moved following his retirement in 1982.
Born April 12, 1919, in Detroit, Jaslow received his bachelor’s degree from the U-M in 1941, after which he spent four years as a fighter pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, a Presidential Unit Citation and other honors. After the war, he returned to the U-M to study dentistry, earning his degree in 1949 as the top student in his class.
Jaslow then returned to active military duty as a dental intern in the newly created U.S. Air Force. In 1956 he received an M.S. in prosthodontics from Iowa State University. He retired from the service in 1964 with the rank of lieutenant colonel and immediately joined the faculty of the School of Dentistry as assistant professor. He became associate professor in 1969 and professor in 1972.
He taught undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in partial denture prosthodontics, devoting himself primarily to supervision and instruction in both the undergraduate and graduate dental clinics. He presented many lectures and demonstrations in continuing education courses over the years and helped create videotapes for instructional use. He authored numerous publications on various aspects of removable partial denture prosthodontics.
Jaslow was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor societies. He was made a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and served as a deputy regent of the organization for many years. He was also a member of numerous other professional dental organizations. While an active faculty member, he held many School of Dentistry committee assignments, including serving as chair of the Counseling Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; sisters Tillie Klein, Elizabeth Rauch and Sylvia Spitzer of Boca Raton, Fla.; daughters Jancy (Don Lewis) of Cincinnati, Betty (David) Macnee of Aurora, Colo., and Sarah of Ann Arbor; and four grandchildren, Nathan, Rachel, Jessica and Eli.
