Bunde was married to David William Semian in August 1966 in Evansville, Wisconsin, her hometown. As Carol J. Semian, she joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and Health while her husband continued his medical studies at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
