DR. A. GEOFFREY NORMAN
1905 - 1982
Dr. Norman began his 24 year career with the University of Michigan in 1952 as a Professor of Botany. From 1955 - 1966 he served as Director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and was instrumental in locating and building the presents facilities.
From 1964 - 1972 he held the office of Vice President for Research. During these 12 years Dr. Norman directed the development of support for The Highway Safety Research Institute (renamed the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute) and undertook the development
of support from NASA for civilian applications of remote sensing. He personally directed the negotiations for establishment of the Institute for Environmental Quality and served as its first Director from 1972 - 1975.
During his long career at the University he also authored and co-authored many books and scientific papers. In 1976 the Regents granted him the title of Professor Emeritus of Botany.
