The Regents of the University hereby express to Alvalyn Eunice Woodward, Assistant Professor of Zoology, upon the occasion of her retirement from active membership in the University faculty, their kind appreciation of her service as a scholar, as a teacher, and as a counselor to students.

She received the Ph.B. and M.S. degrees from the University of Rochester and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan. Before joining our faculty Professor Woodward was associated with the faculties of Central Michigan Normal School, Vassar College, Simmons College, Amherst College, North Carolina College for Women, and the University of Maine. In the twenty-five years of her work as a member of our Department of Zoology, she has become distinguished as a physiologist. From 1927 to 1929 she was engaged in cancer research; in 1947 she was Research Associate at the California Institute of Technology on the problem of "The Effects on Echinoderm Development of Certain Vitamins and Amino Acids."

In 1930 she was elected Chairman of the Zoological Section of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters. In 1934 she was President of the Women's Research Club. She reached the age of seventy years on May 29, 1954, and became eligible under our Bylaws for retirement as of that date.

The Regents of the University of Michigan extend to Professor Woodward their sincere thanks, and trust that the years of well-earned retirement from active service may bring her long-continued health and happiness. They furthermore confer upon her the title Assistant Professor Emeritus of Zoology and invite her to avail herself of all the courtesies customarily shown to emeritus members of the faculty.
