The Literary Committee desire to report as follows:

WHEREAS, The Science of Geology is so intimately connected with the material interests of the State of Michigan, and the development of its mineral and other resources; and,

WHEREAS, Geology is the crown of all the Natural Sciences, and must not be neglected in a course of liberal education; and,

WHEREAS, It is fully expected by the people in the Northern part of the State that an efficient Geologist will be at once appointed; therefore,

Resolved, That Professor Alexander Winchell, LL. D., be and is hereby appointed to the Chair of Geology and Paleontology in this University, at a salary of $2200 per year, salary to commence on the first of October, 1879.
